To make these fun, bright ornaments
you will need:
any frosting (even store bought)
toothpick, lollipop stick or dowel
rolled white fondant (available at any craft store)
Americolor soft gel pastes (Red Red, Electric Green, Leaf Green)
thin, satin ribbon (I got mine at Michaels)
circle cookie cutters (3 inch, 1 1/2 inch, 1/2 inch)
triangle cookie cutter (I just cut out by hand)
light corn syrup
step one: bake your cookies
After rolling out your dough, cut out 3 inch circles and triangles and place on parchment paper lined baking trays. With a toothpick, lollipop stick or dowel, make a hole in the dough centered at the top. I moved the stick around a bit to make a hole big enough to fit the ribbon. Bake as normal and let cool.
step two: make your fondant shapes
Add a few drops of coloring to a palmful of rolled fondant and knead very well. Repeat for red, green and lime colors (since the fondant is already white, not necessary for the white shapes). Warning. This dyes your hands, too. The red is particularly odd-looking. Roll out the fondant between two pieces of wax paper. If the fondant gets too sticky, let sit about 15 minutes. You can also sprinkle flour or confectioner’s sugar on the wax paper and on top, though you’ll have some white remnants. If you have trouble cutting out the shapes, let the rolled out fondant sit for a bit before cutting out.
Cut out triangles and 3 inch circles for each of the cookies. Lay on a wax paper lined baking tray and let harden for 15 to 30 minutes. Matching up with the cookies, poke holes in the fondant with your stick or dowel. (Tip: I laid the cookie on top of the fondant shape and stick a toothpick through the hole to mark the spot. You could probably also use a paperclip.)
Cut out a bunch of 1 1/2 and 1/2 inch circles in a mixture of red, green, lime and white. Place on wax paper lined baking tray to harden for a few hours. With your finger, dab cornsyrup on the back of the circles and “glue” together to make designs. Use the same method of attaching the smaller circles onto your 3 inch circles and triangle fondant pieces. Let set a bit.
step three: assemble your cookies
Spread frosting on your cookies (don’t get too close to the edges or the frosting will ooze out). Place corresponding fondant shapes on top gently. Let set a few hours or overnight. String ribbon through the hole.
