It could have been in the butter substitute (was it too soft when added?). Also, was the dough chilled well before using? Too-mushy dough can be the culprit, too.

Also, if you want to avoid using royal b/c you're uncertain about the bone char, Satin Ice fondant is vegan, so cutouts would be easy + food writer pens!!
