<p>Eeew. But adding some bugs to your marshmallows with <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2011/06/how-to-draw-on-food-ending-the-confusion-about-edible-writers/" target="_blank">edible writers</a> is a quick and easy last minute April Fool&#8217;s idea and it just may keep sticky fingers away from your candy. Here are some more April Fool&#8217;s Day food tricks from around the web:</p>
<p>Secretly replace your <a href="http://www.projectdenneler.com/2011/03/april-fools-fun.html" target="_blank">Tootsie Rolls with&#8230; more candy. By Project Denneler</a>.</p>
<p>That&#8217;s genius.<a href="http://tikkido.com/node/512" target="_blank"> Cookies that look like scoops of ice cream.  From Tikkido</a>.</p>
<p>These are kind of healthy because there are corn flakes involved. <a href="http://bakeat350.blogspot.com/2011/06/desserts-for-dudes-fried-chicken.html" target="_blank">Fried chicken cookies from Bake at 350</a>.</p>
<p>With the pile of luscious pink topping, this pie looks delicious. Except it&#8217;s <a href="http://spoonful.com/recipes/fauxberry-pie" target="_blank">meatloaf and potatoes, from Spoonful</a>.</p>
<p>No one will ever recognize you with these silly<a href="http://www.munchkinmunchies.com/2012/03/april-fools-day-cookies-updated-and.html" target="_blank"> cookie disguises from Munchkin Munchies</a>.</p>
<p>Everything you need for <a href="http://hoosierhomemade.com/april-fools-day-dinner/" target="_blank">April Fool&#8217;s Day appetizers and dinner right here at Hoosier Homemade</a>: Deviled eggs, nuggets and fries, sushi. See what they really are.</p>
<p>These look exactly, exactly like soft boiled eggs. But really it&#8217;s <a href="http://www.littlefoodjunction.com/2011/04/april-fools-day_01.html#.UVSC9DdW2So" target="_blank">vanilla custard and papaya balls from Little Food Junction</a>.</p>
<p>An oldie but goodie, <a href="http://www.cakespy.com/blog/2008/9/21/seriously-sweet-how-to-make-a-candy-salad.html" target="_blank">candy salad from CakeSpy</a>.</p>
<p>Eerily realistic-looking<a href="http://spoonful.com/recipes/fruit-chews-green-beans" target="_blank"> candy green beans</a> and <a href="http://spoonful.com/recipes/rice-cereal-meat-loaf" target="_blank">cereal treat meatloaf from Spoonful</a>.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">My favorite classic kid meal. Mac n&#8217; cheese, chicken nuggets and veggies. But not. By <a href="http://kitchenfunwithmy3sons.blogspot.com/2012/03/april-fools-dinner-dessert.html" target="_blank">Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons</a>.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t know Cheerios grew into doughnuts. I&#8217;m so growing a garden in my backyard. Make <a href="http://www.gourmetmomonthego.com/2010/09/doughnut-seeds.html" target="_blank">&#8220;Donut Seed&#8221; favors at Gourmet-Mom-on-the-Go</a>.</p>
<p>Make <a href="http://blog.hellocupcakebook.com/2010/03/14/this-is-how-you-make-broccoli-from-candy.aspx?ref=rss" target="_blank">candy broccoli at Hello, Cupcake! blog</a>.</p>

<p>Geez, I&#8217;ve done a lot for Spring in the past few years. Which is funny since I much prefer Winter. I know, I know, I&#8217;m the lone person out there for whom this is true. But snow is so dang pretty, I never tire of it. Just wish we actually got some this year. And I&#8217;m the type who doesn&#8217;t want the cold to end, I want to wear sweatshirts and sit in front of a fire. And the world is just quieter in winter, and gosh I like the quiet. And&#8230; enough longing for Winter. I need to psych myself up for Spring. Above are <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2012/03/vegetable-garden-cookies/" target="_blank">vegetable garden cookies</a>. Ha, as if I actually &#8220;garden.&#8221;  As always, you&#8217;ll find everything seasonal in the <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/seasonal" target="_blank">Seasonal button </a>up there, but below I&#8217;m linking to a few of my favorites.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I noticed a few themes in the collection. Each one is pretty predictable.</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-14904" alt="cherryblossom" src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/cherryblossom.png" width="499" height="500" /></p>
<p><strong>Cherry blossoms</strong>, of course, since I live in Washington DC and all. <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2010/03/cherry-blossom-cookies/" target="_blank">Cherry blossom cookies</a>, <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2011/09/as-seen-in-brides-october-2011-issue-painted-cookies-and-paper-cones/" target="_blank">painted cookies in cones</a>, <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2012/03/cherry-blossom-marshmallows/" target="_blank">cherry blossom marshmallows</a>, <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2012/03/painted-cherry-blossom-cookies/" target="_blank">painted cherry blossom cookies</a>.</p>

<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So I got invited to a Pancake Party, and I didn&#8217;t even have to wear my PJs and slippers (though I wear these with stunning frequency, so I was probably wearing them when I made these pancakes). Rachel of <a href="http://www.rachelcooks.com/" target="_blank">Rachel Cooks</a> is hosting a <strong>Pancake Party</strong> for all of July. Each day a different blogger will contribute a different, yummy pancake.  Be sure to visit <a href="http://www.rachelcooks.com/" target="_blank">Rachel Cooks</a> this month to see all the fabulous pancake recipes and ideas from awesome bloggers!!</p>
<p><a href="http://www.rachelcooks.com/index.php/2012/04/24/pancake-party/"><img class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-3658" title="pancake_party_large" src="http://www.rachelcooks.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/pancake_party_large-300x240.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="240" /></a></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I made these pancakes back in APRIL!! And I&#8217;ve been dying to share them with you. I love participating in this kind of thing, because working outside my usual medium is always a fun challenge. I had to choose &#8220;decorated&#8221; pancakes, of course.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-12745" title="wm.pancakes7" src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wm.pancakes7-530x530.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>So I just applied my cookie decorating logic to the pancake, much as my four year old applies her own four year old logic to the unknown universe.  Like how on gray and cloudy days, both the sun and moon are sleeping.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter wp-image-12746" title="wm.pancakes1" src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wm.pancakes1-530x530.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The result? Now I&#8217;m hooked on decorated pancakes. When pancakes are treated like cookies&#8230; Oh, the possibilities!</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.rachelcooks.com/2012/07/08/garden-pancakes-decorated-pancakes/" target="_blank">For the step-by-step how-tos, click HERE to visit Rachel Cooks!!! </a></p>
<p style="text-align: center;">What pancakes will you be making??</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><img class="aligncenter size-large wp-image-12747" title="wm.pancakes5" src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/wm.pancakes5-530x530.jpg" alt="" width="500" height="500" /></p>

<p>I&#8217;m guest posting today over at <a href="http://kitchenfunwithmy3sons.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2012-03-09T13:19:00-08:00&amp;max-results=15" target="_blank">Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons</a>. The lovely Jill is my hostess, and if you haven&#8217;t visited her site yet, you must scroll through the clever food art she makes for her three boys. I&#8217;m all dessert, but she finds ways to turn breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks AND treats into cute and crafty and sometimes silly creations.</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>I thought in honor of Spring arriving&#8211;though it seems it arrived last November, what with our crazy mild Winter&#8211;I thought I&#8217;d pull out my trusty food coloring pens and whip up some flying bugs. The prettier ones anyway.</p>

<p>That&#8217;s a long title, but lots to cover in something so small. It&#8217;s been a looooong time since I made you fondant covered Oreo Cakester petit fours. Yikes, I first came up with these <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2009/07/crazy-easy-colorful-petits-fours">way back HERE</a> almost two years ago. I include this idea in the book, so thought I would revisit them again today.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf5.jpg"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf51.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" border="0" /></a></div>
<div><span style="font-size: large;"><strong>how to make Oreo Cakester daisy petit fours</strong></span></div>
<p><strong>you will need: </strong></p>
<div style="color: #38761d;">Oreo Cakesters</div>
<p><span style="color: #38761d;">fondant (store-bought or</span> <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2010/03/finally-homemade-marshmallow-fondant-and-swirly-pops/" target="_blank">marshmallow fondant</a><span style="color: #38761d;">)</span><br />

<div style="color: #38761d;">little flower fondant cutter (3/4-inch)</div>

<p>*Or, find pre-made edible flowers in the craft store. For tips on finding supplies, <a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/2010/02/stuff-i-use-and-where-to-get-it/" target="_blank">CLICK HERE</a>.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf2.jpg"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf21.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="398" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf3.jpg"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf31.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" border="0" /></a></div>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf4.jpg"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/daisypf41.jpg" alt="" width="400" height="400" border="0" /></a></div>
<p><strong>step one: wrap your petit fours</strong><br />
Knead a few drops of Electric Green food coloring into a handful of fondant very well. Add more drops and knead until desired color is reached. If the fondant gets too sticky from overhandling, let it sit uncovered at room temperature about 15 minutes or until easily pliable. Roll out the fondant about 1/8 to 3/8 inch thick on a surface lightly dusted with confectioner&#8217;s sugar. Dust your rolling pin, too, to prevent sticking. Cut out a piece of fondant large enough to cover the top and sides of a Cakester, with about an inch of excess fondant all around. Lay the piece of fondant over the Cakester, use your fingers to smooth the fondant against the top of the cakester and the sides. Use the knife to cut the excess fondant away from the Cakester. Tuck the edges under the Cakester and use your fingers to smooth the petit four.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto30.png"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto40.png" alt="" width="400" height="337" border="0" /></a></div>
<p><strong>step two: make your flowers</strong><br />
If you are using pre-made flowers, skip this step. To make daisies like shown, roll out white fondant and cut out mini flowers. Knead yellow food coloring into fondant, roll out and cut out 1/2-inch circles. Use a dab of light corn syrup to adhere the yellow circle on the daisy.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto259.png"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto260.png" alt="" width="400" height="295" border="0" /></a></div>
<p><strong>step three: make your toppers</strong><br />
Mix a few drops of green food coloring with a few drops of water on a piece of wax paper. Paint the toothpicks green, lay on the wax paper, and let dry. <a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/52295113/Bug-Topper-Printable">Print out the printable</a>on cardstock. Center the hole punch over the square and cut out the bug. Tape or glue to the toothpick. If desired, tape two toppers back to back to each toothpick.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto422.png"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto423.png" alt="" width="308" height="320" border="0" /></a></div>
<p><strong>step four: add your daisies and toppers</strong><br />
Use dabs of light corn syrup to adhere your daisies to the Cakester and insert a topper.</p>
<div class="separator"><a href="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto336.png"><img src="http://thedecoratedcookie.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/howto337.png" alt="" width="341" height="400" border="0" /></a></div>
