Geez, I’ve done a lot for Spring in the past few years. Which is funny since I much prefer Winter. I know, I know, I’m the lone person out there for whom this is true. But snow is so dang pretty, I never tire of it. Just wish we actually got some this year. And I’m the type who doesn’t want the cold to end, I want to wear sweatshirts and sit in front of a fire. And the world is just quieter in winter, and gosh I like the quiet. And… enough longing for Winter. I need to psych myself up for Spring. Above are vegetable garden cookies. Ha, as if I actually “garden.”  As always, you’ll find everything seasonal in the Seasonal button up there, but below I’m linking to a few of my favorites.

I noticed a few themes in the collection. Each one is pretty predictable.

Cherry blossoms, of course, since I live in Washington DC and all. Cherry blossom cookies, painted cookies in cones, cherry blossom marshmallows, painted cherry blossom cookies.

Birds!   Bluebird brownie pops, poured sugar birdie cookies, painted birdhouse cookies, chicken (or hen?) cake pops.

Bugs! Bug marshmallow pops, butterfly cookies, bug topper printable on Oreo Cakester petits fours, bug cookies, easy Starburst dragonfly toppers, fondant bugs.

And of course, flowers.  Felt flower cupcake toppers, gerbera daisy cookie pops, carnation cookie pops, bite-size daisy cookies, how to make a flower cookie arrangement, springtime marshmallows.

These are likely still fresh in your memory, but given the Summer Olympics are right around the corner, I figured a little reminder wouldn’t hurt. That and I’m nowhere near my own kitchen to make something new, since my daughter and I are currently living as nomads from grandparent’s house to grandparent’s house while construction workers punch lots of holes in the lead-filled walls of our 1930 house.

“Is it Easter yet? Is it Easter yet?” I’ve heard this every morning since Valentine’s Day.  Soon, my darling four-year old, soon. Look, I even spotted the Easter bunny peeking around the corner.

To make these, I cut out 2 1/2-inch squares from my cookie dough. Made my royal icing and tinted pink, green and blue with Americolor Soft Gel Pastes (Electric Pink, Electric Green and Sky Blue). Then I outlined and flooded the background and let dry overnight. I prepared white fondant, rolled it out, cut out 1-inch circles, then cut those in half for the heads. I used scissors to cut out the ears. I attached them to the cookies with light corn syrup. Then I used edible writers to draw the eyes and pink in the ears. Easy peasy! I even bent one of the ears forward.

As promised, I’m back with some more cherry blossoms, because you see, as a Washington DCite, I need to push the cherry blossom. These cookies, about 2 1/2-inches across,  are a bit bigger than these here, but you can follow the same instructions for fondant-topped painted cookies. You may also use a flooded royal icing background instead of the fondant, as long as you let the icing set well, at least one day. (Of course, you can find more how-tos for flooding and fondant and painting with food coloring in Sugarlicious. I’m just sayin’ is all.)

To make shades of pink “paint” and brown “paint,” I used Americolor Soft Gel Pastes, and I mixed a drop of water with a few drops of white and a drop or two of Electric Pink. I mixed some white with Chocolate Brown, and I used just White. I first used a small brush to paint the branch, then just dipped a flat brush in the paint and used it to “sponge” the colors on.

While I mourn the absence of snowman-making this mild winter, sigh, Spring isn’t so bad.

On my to-do list this month:  Head downtown to see the cherry blossoms. Because I live in Washington DC, so it’d be a dang shame to go a year without seeing the cherry blossoms around the Tidal Basin bloom. And I’m ashamed to admit there have been many years in my over twenty in this city that I’ve not seen the blooms. What is it about people who live in tourist attracted cities that don’t take advantage of the tourist attractions themselves? My daughter has changed much of that. Before she was in school and we spent our days trying to get out of the house, at least once a week we’d head down to the Nation’s Mall and tour museums. Museums I hadn’t been to in years before she came around.

This week I’ll be pulling out a couple new ideas for cherry blossom-themed sweets, but to tide you over, I’m revisiting a couple ideas from the archives. Above are painted cherry blossom cookies I made for BRIDES magazine last year.
