The Big Game is coming up quickly folks (as if the hum of football on the television in the background of our lives hasn’t already been leading up to this moment for months). Will you be hosting a game day viewing party?! I, for one, love the party-hosting part even more than the football-watching part. Although, I must admit I love gathering friends and family together and getting in the spirit for a common cause, rooting for their favorite football team. Taking over party hosting lets my husband focus on shouting coaching advice at the screen, so I play my role, and he can lend important advice to the players (ahem). If you want to add some clever, delicious, game day appetizers to your football party, I’ve got you covered with these football tortillas and home town chips and dip.
My spin on Mission® Football Tortillas is a fun way to fit in an already exciting day, and they certainly are a conversation starter. As for the dip, one might question the combination of barbecue pulled chicken, provolone cheese, coleslaw and… French fries?!? But this one happens to pull the flavors of a super-famous sandwich from my husband’s favorite team, the Pittsburgh Steelers. And the dip version is somehow crazy-incredible. Another conversation starter… “Why French fries?”
If your team made the play-offs, woohoo to you! Even if they didn’t, why not serve up a dip that features the flavors of your home town team? It’s one way to connect even more personally to the spirit of the day. And as you can see here, anything goes. Is your home town known for chili? Seafood? Cheese? You can turn any iconic dish into a dip with a little creativity.
The baked football tortillas using Mission Street Tacos Flour Tortillas are sturdy enough and just the right size to dig into the toughest dip when baked from perfect softness to tender crispness, so their versatility really works here. But be sure to also serve extra tortilla chips, so everyone doesn’t have to commit to a football tortilla. Mission Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips are also perfect for dipping, but tasty enough to eat right out of the bag for guests who aren’t willing to go the French-fries- in-dip route. They are restaurant-style quality, for sure, with only four ingredients and sea salt (and gluten-free!).
How to make football tortillas and your home town dip
To make football tortillas, you will need:
- Mission® Street Tacos Flour Tortillas
- brown food coloring
- food-only paint brush
- cream cheese, softened
- disposable decorating bag (may substitute a plastic zip-top bag)
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the tortillas on the tray. Mix a bit of brown food coloring with a few drops of water and use the paint brush to brush the tops of the tortillas. If desired, sprinkle coarse sea salt on the tortillas. Bake until crisp, but tender, about 15 minutes. Let cool. Add about two ounces of the cream cheese to the decorating bag and twist to close. Snip the tip and pipe the “stitching” on the tortillas. Let set.
To make my favorite home town team dip, you will need:
(Feel free to create your own dip based on your home town’s famous food! This crazy dip is based on a famous sandwich shop.)
- 2 cups shredded rotisserie chicken
- 1/4 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce
- hot sauce (optional)
- 5 to 6 ounces provolone cheese
- 1/2 cup prepared cole slaw
- prepared frozen French fries (optional)
Mix the chicken with the barbecue sauce. Add some hot sauce for heat, if desired. Spray a 1.5 quart baking dish or bowl with cooking spray. Place the chicken mixture in the dish or bowl. Top with provolone cheese. Bake until the cheese is melted and starts to brown, about 6 to 8 minutes. Top with cole slaw and French fries and serve immediately with Mission® Thin & Crispy Tortilla Chips and my Mission football tortillas.
