Looking for an easy dessert for your 4th of July party? Even beginner cookie decorators can make these red, white, and blue star cookies.
4th of July star cookies
Thanks to one of my favorite cookie decorating tools, sprinkles, even beginners can make these easy peasy 4th of July star cookies.
Sprinkles cover any royal icing imperfections, so you don’t have to worry as much about the consistency of your icing.
I’m a big fan of thicker royal icing generally, because too-thin icing can cause splotching and take forever to dry. Sprinkles cover the lines of piped icing, leaving a pretty, sparkly cookie.

You should be able to find the cookie cutters, decorating bags, couplers, tips, and sprinkles at the craft store.
For sprinkles, I prefer Wilton brand Sparkling Sugar sprinkles, found online or in the craft store.
The food coloring I use is available from cake decorating stores or amazon. I suggest Americolor Soft Gel Pastes in Red Red, Sky Blue, and Bright White. (For a true blue, closer to the color on the flag, use Royal Blue, but I like the brighter blue, especially since it’s easier to find sprinkles to match.)
how to decorate star cookies
Prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe, chill, roll out, cut-out, bake, and let cool.
Prepare the royal icing and divide in three (or, color about 1 cup of each color and reserve the remaining icing for another use). Color white, red, and blue. Assemble the decorating bags with couplers and tips, fill with icing, and close tightly with a rubber band.
Pour the sprinkles in three shallow bowls.
Pipe an outline on a star cookie. Pipe back and forth to fill. Immediately overturn the cookie into the coordinating color of sprinkles. Let the cookies dry overnight before handling and packaging.
