bottle brush Christmas trees
After World War II, less Christmas ornaments and decor was imported from Germany, and more was made directly in the United States. Not much is known about the retro bottle brush trees, but the Addis Brush Company patented the aluminum Christmas tree in 1950.
It’s believed they began to dye their toilet bowl brushes and turn them into Christmas trees. Aluminum trees were popular until they were mocked in the 1965 special, A Charlie Brown Christmas, and sales started to decline.

how to make bottle brush Christmas tree cookies
printable recipe below
you will need:
- cut-out gingerbread cookie dough
- royal icing
- Christmas tree cookie cutter
- knife or dough scraper
- food coloring (Electric Pink, Electric Green, Sky Blue, Bright White, and Egg Yellow)
- disposable decorating bags
- couplers
- size “2” tips for each color and size “3” tip for white
- sprinkles or sanding sugar (pink, green, blue, and yellow)
what to do:
Prepare the dough according to the recipe. Chill, roll out, and cut out trees. Use the knife or dough scraper to cut the edges from the tree so the sides are smooth and a triangle is formed. Bake and let cool.
Prepare your icing, divide, and tint your colors. Assemble decorating bags with couplers and tips, fill with the colors, and close tightly with rubber bands. The colors will need size 2 tips, and the white size 3.
Start at the top of the tree and pipe back and forth from the middle to the edge down to the bottom. Don’t worry about criss-crossing. Repeat on the other side of the tree. Immediately cover with the same color sprinkles and overturn to remove excess. Pipe the bottom with white.
Let dry overnight.
