healthy banana bread recipe with flax seed and wheat germ
healthy banana bread recipe
This is my favorite banana bread recipe, one I’ve baked for years, and it also happens to have wheat germ and flax seed meal in it. It’s flavorful, dense and the wheat germ and flax seed give the bread a sort of richness. (Geez, as a food blogger, I’m terrible at describing what food tastes like, and I’m actually eating a piece as I type.) It’s good, alright?
My 8 year old loves it. That’s huge. Big. She’s picky even for picky eaters. As in, I can list what foods she will eat and it won’t take long.
Plus, you have all kinds of vitamins in there.
Feel free to add any of your favorite mix-ins, like nuts or chocolate chips. I might even try tossing some chia seeds in there next time. And cinnamon. You can also make banana bread in cute mason jars.

I’m anxious to try this! I’m always looking for “the” banana bread recipe! Can you tell me what size bread pan you used? I have 8 1/2 x 4 1/2 and 9 x 5. Thanks!
meaghanmountford says
Hi MaryEllen! Mine shown is the 8 1/2 by 4 1/2 size. You can use the larger, too, just keep your eye on it at the end a bit earlier!

What can I replace the wheat germ with? I don’t have that & have never cooked with it.
meaghanmountford says
Hi Rhonda, no need to add the wheat germ! I add it just for extra vitamins because it’s so good for you. You can add just a bit more flour instead (maybe an extra 1/4 cup, you don’t need a whole other 1/2 cup)
Janice Willett says
Excellent! I added chia seeds and a few pecans along with a pinch of mixed spices. Thanks so much for sharing!

Awesome! So glad it worked out! I have some chia seeds. I’m going to try adding those next time.

How many servings is this?
meaghanmountford says
Hi Amy, it’s made in a loaf pan, so it will depend on how thinly you slice the pieces. About 8.

looking for a recipe like this for chocolate chip cookies with flax and wheat germ. Do you have any??
meaghanmountford says
Hi! I do have a breakfast cookie recipe that has banana, oatmeal, flax seed, wheat germ and chocolate chips that I LOVE. https://thedecoratedcookie.com/breakfast-cookies/
If you’re looking for a traditional chocolate chip cookie, you could likely just substitute part of the flour (1/4 cup or so) for wheat germ and add 2 tablespoons of flax seed.

This is my new favorite banana bread recipe. I added some chopped 75% dark chocolate to the batter, and I subbed the eggs
for 1/2 cup of applesauce. It turned out amazing.
meaghanmountford says
That’s awesome, thanks Kate! I reeaallly need to try it with the dark chocolate.

Thanks for the recipe! Delicious loaf! This recipe is a keeper because my children liked it, and I like sneaking wheat germ and ground flax into their snacks where I can. 🙂 I added 1 tsp on vanilla and 1 tsp of pumpkin spice to boost the flavour. The texture is pleasing, though I look forward to adding nuts or pumpkin seeds on top next time.
meaghanmountford says
Oh, I have to try the vanilla and pumpkin spice. Yum!!! And yes, I try and add vitamins anywhere I can with my picky eating kids!
