BAKING HACK: How to cut shapes from graham crackers using cookie cutters.
graham cracker “cookie decorating”
If you feel compelled to decorate cookies (or, more specifically in my house, if my kids really want to decorate cookies), and you just don’t have the time to make dough, let it chill, roll it out, bake it and let it cool, just grab a box of graham crackers. I started doing this for my 3 year old, since she always wants to “help” me when I’m working on a blog post involving cookie decorating. Instead of handing her the cut-out cookies I need to photograph, I hand her graham crackers and some of my icing bags.
Decorate however you like. Because I’m a fan of chocolate-covered graham crackers, I went for candy melts to decorate these. Use frosting (store-bought or homemade), royal icing, chocolate, candy, whatever.
To save you even more time, you can skip the instructions below and just watch this 30 second video. It really could not be easier.
how to cut shapes from graham crackers
First, make sure your cookie cutters fit on your graham crackers. These letters cut it close, but I could make it work.
Second, place a few graham crackers on a microwave-safe plate. Because they cool quickly, work with no more than three graham crackers at a time.
Third, place a damp paper towel on top of the crackers. Make sure it’s not dripping wet, just damp. Squeeze it out well if it’s too wet.
Fourth, microwave for about 20 seconds, or until the crackers are soft. You’ll get to know how many seconds works best in your microwave. The crackers should be soft enough to cut without cracking, but not so soft they are floppy.
Fifth, cut out your shapes and let cool. It won’t take long to cool and re-harden. If your crackers start to cool and harden too quickly, just pop them back in the microwave.
Sixth, decorate!! Here, I melted candy melts in the microwave according to package directions and piped the melted candy on the graham crackers with a decorating bag. See below for supplies.

Does he graham cracker harden back up or does it stay a little soggy?
meaghanmountford says
Hi Brianna, it hardens up pretty quickly, so I usually work fast, with one graham cracker at a time.
