flower cheese plate
I’m in love with this gorgeous cheese plate, and it’s a surprisingly easy appetizer idea for any party. Cheese plate? Cheese board? Charcuterie?
I’m so used to creating fun SWEET food, I’m not as savvy with my appetizer and snack terms.
what cheese should I use for a cheese plate?
To make this cheese plate you’ll need the sliced cheese found in the deli department of the supermarket (in pre-sliced packages).
For the rolled flowers, choose a softer, thin cheese. Provolone is ideal. For the cut-out flowers, any thicker cheese slices will do. Cheddar is a great choice.
what can I add to a cheese board?
Once you make your cheese “flowers” with herb leaves and green bean stems, add anything else you like to your cheese board. I added crackers and small bowls of blueberries and mixed nuts. Here are a few more ideas:
- More cheese! Add a mixture of soft and hard cheeses
- Sliced baguette
- Parmesan crisps
- Fresh fruit (grapes, strawberries, sliced pears)
- Dried fruits (cranberries, apricots, figs)
- Mixed nuts
- Sweet spreads (honey, chutney)
- Olives
- Salty meats (prosciutto or thin slices of sausage)
- Garnish (sprigs of rosemary or other herbs)

how to make a flower cheese plate
ingredients you will need:
- Sliced Provolone cheese
- Sliced cheddar cheese
- blueberries
- herb leaves (sage or basil work well)
- French green beans (blanched in boiling water for 30 seconds, if preferred)
additional ingredients for your plate
- crackers
- mixed nuts
- any other you prefer from the list above
tools you will need:
- cheese board (8 x 11-inch shown here)
- flower cookie cutter (1 1/2 inch used here)
- scissors
- small bowls or ramekins
what to do:
Separate slices of cheddar cheese. Use the flower cutter to cut flowers from each slice. Cut as closely as possible to minimize waste. (Save the scraps to make grilled cheese or to sprinkle on salads.) Set aside.
Separate slices of Provolone cheese. Carefully cut a spiral in a slice of cheese with the scissors.
Starting at the outside, loosely roll up the spiral. Pinch the bottom to secure and trim any excess. Rest on your cheese board atop a sage or basil leaf.
Drop a blueberry in the center to help secure the flower.
To arrange the rest of the cheese board, stack the cheddar flowers on the opposite side of the cheese board.
Add blueberry “centers” to the flowers scattered on top. Add a few green beans for stems. Fill the rest of the cheese board with crackers, ramekins of blueberries and mixed nuts, or any other additions.
Serve!
TIP: To make-ahead of the party, assemble the cheese plate the day of the party without the nuts and crackers, cover loosely with plastic wrap and refrigerate. Add the nuts and crackers right before serving.

This is such a fun idea. I love how you made the flowers using the white cheese. The entire platter is so pretty.
