How did crime scenes ever get linked with Halloween? I think CSI has freaked us out enough to make the eerie association happen. Or it’s just all the bloggers like me making crime scene Halloween decorations. No matter how it all started, here is an easy way to dress up a plain cupcake to make crime scene cupcakes.

how to make crime scene cupcakes

you will need

• Cupcakes
• Frosting
• Red and white food coloring
• Disposable decorating bags
• Size “12” decorating tip
• Rubber band
• Yellow construction paper
• 4-inch skewers
• Scissors
• Glue stick
• Black marker

Find the food coloring, decorating bag, and decorating tip in the craft store. Find the skewers in the supermarket.

Step 1: Prepare your favorite cupcakes according to the recipe and let cool completely.

Step 2: Prepare frosting according to your favorite recipe, or, use store-bought frosting. (TIP: To thicken store-bought frosting so it’s easier to pipe, stir in confectioner’s sugar until the desired consistency is reached.) Scoop out a few tablespoons of frosting and set aside. Tint the remaining frosting white, fit a decorating bag with the tip, fill with white frosting, and close tightly with a rubber band. Color the reserved frosting red and either fill an empty decorating bag or cover and set aside.

Step 3: Pipe a swirl of white frosting on the cupcakes. Then either snip about 1/2 inch from the tip of the decorating bag holding the red, or with a small spoon, pipe or drizzle red frosting on the cupcake for “blood.”

Step 4: To prepare the cupcake toppers, cut strips of yellow paper about 1/2 –inch by 3 1/2 inches. Write “CRIME SCENE” on the strips of paper. Glue the ends around two skewers, and insert into the cupcakes.

Step 5: Working with one cupcake at a time, pipe a swirl of frosting on top of the cupcake and immediately attach several eyes.
