These melted witch cookies are an easy Halloween treat idea.
melted witch cookies
I can’t believe I waited so long to make melted witch cookies, especially since they are inspired by my first-ever, original, (now-classic) melted snowman cookies, an idea that I came up with TEN years ago that has since gone viral.
So these melted witch cookies are overdue, but inevitable. They are very simple to make, since they use only one color of icing and store-bought ingredients for the hat and broom.
We can all thank Frank L. Baum for the idea that witches melt, as that is how Dorothy was able to free the fictional world of Oz of the Wicked Witch of the West, both in the original book and the Wizard of Oz movie. Children’s literature is my next great love (after cookies), so I always appreciate when there can be some crossover.

how to make melted witch cookies
To make melted witch cookies, you’ll need to first bake chocolate cookies (or any of your favorite cut-out sugar cookies), cut them into circles, and frost with green icing.
Then, add a witch hat made from Oreos and Hershey’s Kisses and a broom made from pretzel sticks and chow mein noodles. That’s it!
you will need:
- chocolate cut-out cookie dough
- royal icing
- 3-inch circle cookie cutter
- electric green food coloring
- disposable decorating bag
- coupler
- size 4 decorating tip
- Oreos
- Hershey’s Kisses
- pretzel sticks
- chow mein noodles

what to do
Prepare the dough according to the recipe, chill it, roll it out, and cut out circles. Bake and let cool completely.
Prepare the royal icing. Tint some of the icing green.
You’ll want the icing to be of a consistency thin enough to lose its shape when piped (so it looks smoothed), but thick enough you can pipe an outline without it running off the cookie. Thin the icing to the right consistency by adding drops of water, a tiny bit at a time.
Prepare a decorating bag with tip, fill with the icing, and close tightly with a rubber band.
Pipe an outline on the cookies. Then, pipe back and forth to fill with the green icing. Let set just a few minutes, and then top with the Oreo hat and pretzel broom.
To make the Oreo hat, separate an Oreo. (It’s OK if one side still has icing, since that will be the underside). Add a dab of frosting on top and stick a Hershey’s kiss on the frosting to secure.
To make the broom, rest a pretzel stick on the cookie. Add a few chow mein noodles to one end.
Let the cookies dry very well, preferably overnight.
