piped flower cookies for Fall
Every year I start thinking of Fall when it’s still nearing 100 degrees outside. It’s my favorite season. Bring on the scarves and pumpkin spice and leaf-themed wreaths. I’m not exactly sure what type of flower these piped flower cookies for Fall are, as I’m no expert at growing things. Mums maybe? Asters?

frosting vs royal icing
Ordinarily, you would use royal icing to decorate cookies. Royal icing dries hard and works very well for flat designs. These fall flower cookies with royal icing are a great example.
However, to make the piped flower cookies, I use bakery frosting, which is used to decorate cakes and cupcakes, to give the design a dimensional look.
Bakery frosting (which combines butter and shortening with powdered sugar and milk), buttercream frosting (butter, powdered sugar, and milk), Swiss meringue frosting… any frosting you would use to decorate cakes to make dimensional designs can be substituted here.
Keep in mind that such frostings do NOT fully set like royal icing, so your cookies can not be stacked or wrapped.
