step one: prepare your cookies
Prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe, chill it, roll it out, cut out circles, bake, and let cool completely.
step two: prepare your icing
Prepare royal icing according to the recipe. Divide (I color about 3/4 cup at a time, so you will have leftover icing) the icing and tint black, red, orange, and yellow.
The black icing should be of outline consistency, or stiff enough to keep its shape when piped. The red, orange, and yellow icing should be thinned with drops of water until a flooding consistency. However, don’t thin the icing too much, as you don’t want it to run off the side of the cookie.
Assemble a decorating bag with coupler and tip, fill with the black icing, and close tightly with a rubber band. The red, orange, and yellow icings can be transferred to decorating bags (no tip and coupler needed) with the tip snipped.
step three: make your kebabs and hot dogs
To make the hot dogs, use a black food coloring pen to draw lines on a red Mike & Ike’s candy. Set aside.
To make the kebabs, cut yellow, red, orange, and green Dots candy or mini gumdrop in half horizontally, and then in half again. This will give you wedge shapes. Break a piece of dried spaghetti into 2 to 2 1/2 inch pieces. Press four candy pieces onto the top of the piece of spaghetti. The candy should be sticky enough to attach to the spaghetti. Set aside.
NOTE: You may use a toothpick in place of the spaghetti. However, I chose to use spaghetti as a precaution, in case kids try the cookies and forget to remove the kebabs.
step four: decorate your cookies
Outline a cookie in yellow or orange icing. Pipe a bit of yellow icing, orange, and then red icing on each cookie. Use a toothpick or piece of spaghetti to swirl the icing. Let the cookies set well, about an hour.
Pipe a grill shape (a circle with lines) using the black icing. Top with a kebab and/or hot dogs.
Let the cookies dry overnight.
