I could not have predicted in 2019 I’d be making mask emoji cookies in 2020.
mask emoji cookies
So, 2020 huh? It’s certainly a weird year. The world-altering pandemic has had us masked, isolated, stuck at home, party-free, and under the constant threat of death. So here are some happy mask emoji cookies! That should balance things out (ahem).
On the bright side, there are a jillion cool looking masks out there to choose from. I’m starting to regret my emojis have boring white masks.
Sadly, many of the 200,000 deaths (expected to double this fall) in the United States could have been saved if more Americans wore masks. We can still save 10s of 1000s of lives if we all start cooperating now.
The CDC has information on masks. This Scientific American article outlines the importance, too.

how to make emoji cookies
you will need:
- royal icing
- sugar cookie dough
- circle cookie cutter
- disposable decorating bags
- couplers
- decorating tips (sizes 1, 2, and 3)
- black food coloring
- yellow food coloring
- white food coloring
- heart sprinkles (optional)
what to do:
Prepare cookie dough according to the recipe. Chill it, roll it out, cut out your cookies, bake, and let cool.
Prepare royal icing. The consistency should be thick enough not to run off of the cookie but thin enough the lines of icing disappear. Overturn a spoonful in the bowl. The lines of icing should disappear in 15 to 18 seconds.
Tint some icing yellow (I use about a cup of icing at a time for background colors), and some black and white (you’ll need less of these colors, about 1/2 cup).
Assemble decorating bags with couplers and tips. Fill with icing and close with rubber bands.
To decorate the cookies, outline the circle with yellow fitted with a 3 tip. Pipe back and forth to fill. Let set a bit.
Fit black and white with tips sizes 1 or 2. Pipe eyes (or add heart sprinkles) and masks.
Let cookies dry overnight before packaging and handling.

If everyone would just grow up and put a mask on their face then we could all see each other smiling much sooner!
