How to decorate “you complete me” heart cookies for Valentine’s Day.
Valentine’s Day cookies
I’m not really a “you complete me” kind of gal. In fact, I could probably make a case for Dorothy telling Jerry Maguire “good-bye” instead of “you had me at hello.” But I made you some “You complete me” heart cookies anyway, in the spirit of Valentine’s Day.
Besides, the good folks of the world seem to like the notion of “you complete me,” so let’s go with that. And it is a lovely notion. Though for me, romance is my husband bringing home my favorite box (bottle, I mean bottle, did I say box?) of wine and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

step one: bake your cookies.
Prepare cookie dough according to the recipe, chill it, roll it out and cut out hearts. Use a sharp knife or dough scraper to cut the hearts in half. Place on a parchment paper-lined baking tray and bake. Let cool.
step two: prepare your icing.
Prepare royal icing according to the recipe. Divide and tint your colors: Red and pink (or any other colors you like). Prepare decorating bags with couplers and tips, fill with icing and close tightly with rubber bands.
step three: decorate your cookies.
Pipe an outline on a heart half. Pipe back and forth to fill the heart half completely, then immediately cover generously with a matching color of sprinkles. Repeat with all the heart halves, using a variety of colors. Let the cookies dry overnight before handling and packaging.
