Traditional housewarming gift idea with free printables.
housewarming gift
Recently I went a-searchin’ for a housewarming gift for recently-married relatives of ours moving into a new home. Of course, I hit up google and Pinterest.
I found a few that spoke of a traditional housewarming gift (a tradition I, for one, have never heard of) wherein you put together an assortment of symbolic goods.
I find this genius since so many move into new homes NOT needing more “stuff.” These symbolic goods included:
bread so you never go hungry
wine so you never go thirsty
candles so you always have light
sugar so you always have sweetness (honey was a common one, too)
salt so you always have spice and flavor in life
broom so you always have cleanliness
coins so you always have good fortune
rice so you have fertility (I’m not going there)
olive oil so you always have health
wood so you always have stability
knives so you always have protection
Have you ever heard of this? I’ve moved into 3 different apartments and 2 different houses in the past twenty years, and no one ever got ME a gift of symbolic goods (harrumph).
Well, I love this idea, so I thought I’d make my own. And I even made a printable so you can make your own, too.
In my housewarming gift, I included:
- bucket from The Containter Store
- bottle of wine
- candles
- loaf of bread
- sea salt from Whole Foods
- Girl Scout cookies
- practical things: magnetic kitchen helper guides, hammer tool and cord ties, all found at The Container Store
And I made this printable for Bread, Wine, Salt, Cookies, Candles and Tools.
It comes with a tag to label your container, too.
How cute is that? (Just answer “very” please.)
To add the tags, use a color printer to print THIS PRINTABLE on letter-size white photo paper or cardstock. Cut around the gray lines and attach the tags.
