This vanilla and chocolate pudding pie in a jar is a quick and easy no-bake dessert perfect for summer.
pudding pie
I love pudding pie. It’s such a throwback to childhood when my mom would often make the classic pie with a graham cracker crust, layer of homemade vanilla or butterscotch pudding, topped with a layer of homemade chocolate pudding.
This Jello pudding pie version, made with instant pudding, is so easy to whip up to package in little mason jars. It’s the perfect make-ahead dessert for summer parties. Or, make them to have on hand. Grabbing a single-serving jar from the fridge is so much simpler than cutting a pie.
how to thicken instant pudding
Because you are layering the pudding, it’s best if the instant pudding is a bit thicker. The best (and most creamy and delicious) way to do this is to substitute heavy whipping cream for milk. Or, use a combination of whole milk and heavy whipping cream.

ingredients and supplies you’ll need:
- 10 8-ounce mason jars
- 1 sleeve graham crackers
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 6 tablespoons melted butter
- 1 package Instant Vanilla Pudding
- 1 package Instant Chocolate Pudding
- 6 cups heavy cream, whole milk, or a combination (divided)
what to do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and set aside.
Place the graham crackers in a ziploc bag and crush with a mallet or rolling pin. (You’ll have about 1 3/4 cups crumbs.) Pour into a bowl. Add the sugar and melted butter and stir well. Sprinkle on the baking tray. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until the crumbs are golden and crispy. Remove and let cool.
Place two heaping tablespoons of the crumbs in each mason jar and set aside.
Prepare vanilla instant pudding. In a large bowl, place 3 cups of the cream with the package of pudding. Whisk or beat with a mixer for 2 minutes. Pudding will start to set within 5 minutes.
Drop 4 to 5 tablespoons of pudding in each jar, tapping the jar on a dishtowel-covered counter to flatten.
Place the jars in the refrigerator while preparing the chocolate pudding using the same instructions. Dollop scoops of chocolate on top of the vanilla pudding to fill.
Put lids on the jars and store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.
