These simple and easy rose cookies are great flower cookies for beginner cookie decorators.
easy rose cookies
Easy rose cookies are decorated with just two colors of royal icing on simple circle cookies.
I made them for my niece’s 13th birthday (13 roses, of course). Choose two tones of any colors you like, even a rainbow of roses.
Beyond birthdays, decorate rose cookies for Easter, Mother’s Day, spring, garden parties, or for any occasion.

how to decorate rose cookies
you will need:
- cut-out sugar cookie dough
- circle cookie cutter (2 1/2-inch used here)
- royal icing
- food coloring (Red Red, Electric Pink, and Egg Yellow used here)
- disposable decorating bags
- couplers
- size 4 decorating tips
first, bake your cookies
Prepare the cookie dough according to the recipe, chill it, roll it out about 1/4-inch thick on a floured surface, cut out your circles, bake, and let cool completely.
second, prepare your icing
Make the royal icing according to the recipe. Divide the icing.
For each color you use, you’ll need two tones. Use the same food coloring for both tones, simply add more food coloring to the darker tone. The darker color will be the outline color, so this should be thick enough to hold its shape.
The lighter color will be the fill-in color, so should be of flooding consistency (or, thinned with drops of water just until the icing folds in upon itself).
Prepare a decorating bag with coupler and size 4 decorating tip and fill with the outline icings. Close with rubber bands.
You may fill empty decorating bags (no tips needed) for the thinned icing and just snip the tips before piping.
third, decorate your cookies
Outline the cookie with a darker color of icing as shown, in a swiggly swirl. Let the icing set about 15 minutes. Fill with the thinned icing. Let the cookies dry overnight before packaging, handling, or shipping.
