How to make dragonfly and butterfly marshmallows with food writers.
I’m guest posting today over at Kitchen Fun with My 3 Sons. The lovely Jill is my hostess, and if you haven’t visited her site yet, you must scroll through the clever food art she makes for her three boys.
I’m all dessert, but she finds ways to turn breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks AND treats into cute and crafty and sometimes silly creations. So I made some dragonfly and butterfly marshmallows on a stick.
I thought in honor of Spring arriving–though it seems it arrived last November, what with our crazy mild Winter–I thought I’d pull out my trusty food coloring pens and whip up some flying bugs. The prettier ones anyway.

So now you have all those food coloring pens. What next? Here are some more marshmallow ideas.
how to make dragonfly and butterfly marshmallows
You will need:
- marshmallows
- lollipop sticks
- food coloring pens
- food coloring (green or any other color)
- wax paper
- paint brush
*Find the lollipop sticks, food coloring and paint brush at the craft store. You may also find food coloring pens there, though I recommend Americolor Gourmet Writers or the FooDoodler Fine Linepack of ten, both available in specialty stores or online. I have a whole post all about food coloring pens HERE.
What to do:
First, paint your lollipop sticks.
Mix a few drops of green food coloring (or any color you like) with a couple drops of water on a piece of wax paper. Paint the lollipop sticks and let them rest on the wax paper until dry.
Use the food coloring pens to draw your butterflies and dragonflies (or anything!). Skewer the marshmallow with a lollipop stick and that’s it!

I “weigh” it down with a couple drops of water or even a couple drops of white food coloring, but I’m now realizing that I could just use non-toxic acrylics, too… Hmmm, that would work so much better!
